There are many things that you can do in order to take care of your smile. Today our Lincoln Park dentists are going to be sharing with you a few useful oral hygiene tips that you can easily incorporate into your life.
First, let’s review the basics! The foundation of a strong oral hygiene routine is twice daily brushing, flossing at night, and using a mouth rinse if necessary.
Once you have covered these bases, you can take these additional steps for an extra oral health boost.
1. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is great for whole body health, and it is really important for your oral health, specifically. When you are drinking enough water, your body is able to produce bacteria-neutralizing saliva. A dry mouth allows oral bacteria to grow, and causes bad breath.
2. Rinse your mouth throughout the day
After you finish eating or drinking (something other than water) oral bacteria will remain active for about 30 minutes. During these 30 minutes, the bacteria in your mouth will feed off of the sugars and carbohydrates that you have consumed. In order to minimize bacterial activity, you should rinse your mouth with water shortly after eating or drinking. That way, the oral bacteria will have fewer lingering substances to feed on!
3. Don’t let stuck food stick around!
If you do get some food stuck between your teeth during the day, take the time to clean it out properly. You can do this by pulling water between your teeth, or by using a piece of floss. Just try to avoid using sharp instruments, like toothpicks, as these can actually do more harm than good.
